Cultural & Historic South Devon Attractions

All within easy reach of Flear Farm Cottages, Devon is home to numerous family-friendly destinations and attractions to explore. From days spent visiting one of the many stately homes to thrilling walks across rugged Devon landscapes, we've put together a few of our favourite South Devon attractions for you to visit during your stay.

Ancient stone castle with a grand arched entrance, fortified towers, and partially ruined walls, surrounded by lush greenery under a cloudy sky.

Berry Pomeroy

Located just outside of Totnes, Berry Pomeroy is one of the most popular South Devon attractions. Currently owned by the Duke of Somerset, the castle is infamous for it's spooky tales of ghosts and general historic significance.

Originally thought to have been built during the Norman period, the castle has much to see and explore. Visitors can learn about how cooking was done in the 17th century, as well as exploring the beautiful castle grounds and woodland that encase this stunning attraction.

Totnes Castle

Standing at the highest point of Totnes, this motte-and-bailey castle was built by Judhael of Brittany - a follower of the legendary William the Conqueror - in 1067. Originally a wooden structure, it was later rebuilt with stone walls in 1219.

When you think of castles, you think of sieges, war, and brave warriors. Totnes Castle however, never saw a single battle take place. It was mostly used for peaceful talks and meetings amongst high-ranking lords and noblemen of the district. Today, it remains a centrepiece of Totnes, offering visitors sweeping views of the town and beyond.

Dartmoor National Park

368 square miles of Devon heaven. Dartmoor National Park is one of, if not the most popular South Devon attraction due to its towering granite formations, incredible wildlife, and deep history coarsing through the land.

It’s easy to while away the day on Dartmoor. With many trails to explore and tors to visit, it can be daunting to know where to start. We recommend beginning with some of the more popular destinations, such as Haytor (known among locals as ‘the Giant’s Foot’), Lydford Gorge, Wistman’s Wood, Hound Tor, and Princetown—home to Dartmoor Prison.

When you visit Dartmoor, we highly recommend bringing a good pair of walking boots and waterproofs as the weather can change quickly due to Dartmoor's microclimate. Dog walkers should also be mindful that there are often wildlife grazing, so please be respectful of the space.

Paignton Zoo

Home to over 2,000 animals and incredible species of plants, Paignton Zoo is a families' dream day out. A 37 minute drive away from Flear Farm, the zoo is one of the most important South Devon attractions, as it has been preserving wildlife and educating families on the majesty of nature for 102 years

So what can you do in Paignton Zoo? Aside from touring the grounds and seeing the animals, children can engage in interactive animal experiences for hands-on learning, and when you get peckish, you'll find 6 different shops to get refreshments from. You can also adopt an animal to help the zoo protect and preserve these magnificent animals.

Once you're finished, you can visit the gift shop to get something to remember your visit by. Inside, you'll find plush toys, keychains, or a poster, there's something for every animal lover to take home.

National Trust Properties

The National Trust properties in Devon are simply beautiful. Orvseeing extensive areas of the Devon's coastline, woodlands, and moorland, the work that the National trust do to maintain these historical gems has never been more important.

Some of the most popular South Devon attractions under thew care of the National Trust include Greenway (holiday home of Agatha Christie), Castle Drogo, A La Ronde, Buckland Abbey, Killerton, and Knighthayes Court. Many of these properties have a second-hand bookshop onsite, as well as a café to grab any refreshments from.

We recommend checking out the National Trust website before visiting, as some properties are non dog-friendly. You can visit the website here.

We all had a fab time

Dear Camilla and Barney,

Thank you for having us, we all had a fab time, especially my son who is now a trampoline addict.

It really was as wonderful as we remembered it and we look forward to coming back many times in the future and I’m sure our children will grow up to have magical memories of adventures at Flear Farm as we do.

Many thanks.

  Wonderful Stay

Hi all,

Thank you so much for a wonderful stay.

The cottage was impeccable, a perfect balance between a home and a holiday and the facilities on site were again at such a high standard for everyone to enjoy. It is clear how well thought out and cared for Flear Farm is and we all had a wonderful time and we’re not ready to leave.

We will hopefully be back and have already begun recommending to friends.

Thanks again.

David
  Wonderful

Dear Barney and Camilla,
Thank you so much for making our family Christmas weekend in Flear House so wonderful. The house is beautiful and with all the Christmas decorations and the stunning Christmas trees which you kindly provided, it was very special indeed. This was our second visit to Flear Farm and I'm sure it'll not be our last.
As always, the play barn, swimming pool, tennis courts, woodland walks etc were thoroughly enjoyed by all. Merry Christmas to you and the boys.

We all had the most wonderful week

We all had the most wonderful week, and for a three generation family that is certainly an achievement. I truly think you have thought of everything and we all really appreciated the high quality of everything in the house, from kitchen appliances to bathrooms and to beautiful beds and bedding. Everything in the house, combined with the fantastic facilities around the site, made for a truly wonderful and relaxing week. The grandchildren had a brilliant time with the play barn, the indoor pool and meeting the animals. The lovely weather was also a bonus and we were able to make full use of the pool and barbeque.

Thank you once again and I hope we will return in the future.

The Best We Have Stayed At

Dear All at Flear Farm

Many thanks. We had a great time. We have stopped as a family at a number of similar family holiday cottage complexes in Dorset and North and South Devon. Flear was voted by everyone as the best we have stayed at. Only problem we have is that our grandchildren loved Betty and their parents are under great pressure to have a cat!

  idyllic holiday venue

Hello Barney and Camilla

May I say what an idyllic holiday venue you have. It is ideal for the smaller children and all 4 of our grandchildren aged from 2 to 8 loved it especially the play barn. Flear House was perfect for us and really suited the family. The peace and quiet was lovely and very safe for all the children.

Thank you for everything.
