Our picks for the most beautiful places in Devon to visit

With its stunning coast line, sparkling rivers, lush green hills and ancient woodlands, there are no shortage of beautiful places in Devon. We have rounded up some favourite spots for walks (discover more walks here) that offer spectacular scenery and unique aspects, all of which are suitable for family days out.

Island adventure

Burgh Island is an iconic tidal island across from the beautiful beach of Bigbury-on-Sea. You can cross the causeway on foot at low tide (check the times) or take the sea tractor when the water rises. Bigbury’s golden sands and clear blue waters make it a popular family destination, while its tiny adjoining island has a host of fascinating features, including an Art Deco hotel made famous by author Agatha Christie, who set one of her murder mysteries there. Today, though, the only crime is not to stop for an ice cream as you soak in the scenery. On a sunny day, take a picnic and enjoy a family day out at one of the most beautiful places in Devon.

Head for heights

Berry Head nature reserve is perched atop 200-foot-high cliffs commanding stunning views of the Devon coast. Surrounded by water on three sides, with breathtaking scenery in every direction, it’s a spot with real wow factor. Walk up from the pretty town of Brixham (about a mile) or drive up to the visitor car park. As well as feasting your eyes on the endless views, you can also walk the ramparts of the Napoleonic War fortifications and make a pitstop at the Guardhouse Cafe.

By the seaside

Separated from the sea by only a narrow shingle bar, Slapton Ley is noted for being the largest natural freshwater lake in south-west England, making it one of the most unique and beautiful places in Devon. It’s also a nature reserve and a lovely place for a stroll. Park in one of the three car parks and head for the lake, which is surrounded by reedbeds, marshes and woodland habitats. After a peaceful wander around the water’s edge, head on down to the endless shingle stretch of Slapton Sands, where if you’re lucky you might spot a seal or two while you enjoy a picnic on the beach.

Haytor Rocks - Flear Farm Cottages

On the moor

If you’re in the mood for awe-inspiring tors with jaw-dropping panoramas, Dartmoor offers plenty of choices. Haytor Rocks is a favourite place to start exploring and even little legs can make the climb up. The views from the top, which stretch as far as the coast, are truly spectacular, making this one of the most beautiful places in Devon. On the way down, it’s worth doing the Haytor Quarry circular, now a tranquil lake where water lilies bloom alongside fascinating remnants of its granite-quarrying past.

Castle Drogo - Flear Farm Cottages

Valley ramble

While Dartmoor’s tors boast unmatched panoramas, its valleys and woodlands are also among the most beautiful places in Devon. For one such spot to explore, park by the 17th-century stone arch of Fingle Bridge, then follow the River Teign as it winds its way through ancient woodland towards Castle Drogo. A second, small bridge allows you to cross over and walk back on the other side of the river, offering a different perspective of this local beauty spot. The route can be muddy and is a little tricky in places, especially for small children, but it’s a popular place for a stroll. Take a picnic or stop off at the Fingle Bridge Inn at the end.

Greenway - Flear Farm Cottages

Take to the river

The River Dart boasts something for everyone: riverside rambles with views for miles, historic pubs in picture-perfect villages, scenic picnic spots beside sparkling waters, plus water sports and river cruises. For a family day out that lets you take in one of the most beautiful places in Devon, head for the village of Dittisham, which is surrounded by lush, rolling hills and has views across the River Dart. From here you can walk along the River Dart Trail to Dartmouth, which is a hike of several miles that includes some steep and rugged terrain. Alternatively, take in the sights on the regular ferry service instead. There is also a ferry across the river to the eastern bank, where you can visit National Trust site the Greenway Estate. This Georgian mansion was once the holiday home of Agatha Christie, who is said to have described it as “the loveliest place in the world”.
